Margaret was born in Scotland on December 10, 1835 to George Galbraith I (1812-1840) and Ann Wilkie (1813-1875).
When Margaret was five years of age her father died of yellow fever on St. Kitts Island in the West Indies. He was serving the British Crown as a civil engineer. Her mother was also stricken with yellow fever but survived. After returning to England Margaret's mother married John Hooper and had four more children.
In helping to care for her new brothers and sisters, Margaret began the chief vocation of her life, that of mothering and caring for countless children. Besides rearing her own ten children, she was helpful with her husband's orphaned brothers and sisters, rearing some of the children of her husband's second wife, and two orphaned boys from England. Her husband met these boys when on a mission to England.
Margaret and her mother and family left England with an LDS group of converts under the direction of President Dorr Curtis. After landing in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 16 Mar 1854, they sailed up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. From there, they went to Kansas and joined a compay of five hundred with fifty wagons, under the direction of Captain Daniel Cairns. They left for the journey July 1, 1854 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley October 3, 1854 where she met her future husband.
Margaret married Henry William Manning on 14 March 1855 and was later endowed and sealed in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 6, 1862. She was for many years the President of the Relief Society in Hooper. In the winter of 1896, she developed an abdominal cancer and was operated on for the lesion, on the dining room table of her niece, Mrs. George E. Browining, in Ogden, Utah. She recovered in spite of a surgical accident which caused cruel suffering for the rest of her thirteen years of life. She continued to serve as a nurse until she died June 12, 1909.
Margaret's husband survived her, dying April 28, 1916. The entire community of Hooper honored Margaret at her funeral.
