Dr. Willard Cleon Skousen was born on January 20, 1913 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada to Margarita and Royal Pratt Skousen. His grandparents are Willard Richard Skousen and Sophronia Smith Skousen. His great-grandparents are James Niels Skousen and Sidsel Pedersen. James Niels Skousen is Eliza Skousen Brown's father.
Cleon was raised with the teachings of the Mormon faith. living in Canada, the Mexican Mormon colonies, California, and Utah. He served a mission to Great Britain for two-years when he was a teenager of 17 to 19 years. He was elected the Studentbody president of San Bernardino California Junior College.
When Cleon was 21 he worked as a government aid in Washington, D.C., and in 1935 became an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a position he held for sixteen years until 1951. He then accepted an invitation to join the faculty at Brigham Young University.
In 1936 Cleon returned to San Bernardino to marry Jewel Pitcher. They raised eight children and are grandparents to fifty grandchildren and more than fifty great-grandchildren.
In 1956 Dr. Skousen was asked to serve as Chief of Police for Salt Lake City. During his four year term he also served as the editor of the national police magazine "Law and Order".
In 1960 Dr. Skousen began speaking tours around the country basing his talks on his book "The Naked Communist". In 1967 he returned to Brigham Young University to teach Book of Mormon, Old Testament, and Latter-day Saint History classes.
In 1972, Cleon organized a non-profit educational foundation, "The Freemen Institute" a study seminar of America's early government documents and our founding fathers, that circulated to various cities. A diploma was issued to graduates of the week-long seminar. The text "The Making of America" was used throughout the U.S. to educate high school students on early American history.
